Bill Bowes, Fire Chief , Papillon, Nebraska

As Fire Chief, one of the questions Bill Bowes is most commonly asked is this: 'How many women firefighters do you have?'  Much more so than in the past, people are aware that firefighting is an occupation in which women can be successful. At the time of this writing (2017), The Papillon Fire Department had no females and no self-identified minorities among its personnel. While there was not yet any political pressure to solve this problem, there is a community   expectation that the Fire Department will be a more diverse organization.  The purpose of Bill's project was to develop a plan that will enable the Department to recruit and hire women and minorities. While the plan encompasses all under-represented groups, there was a primary focus on the recruitment and hiring of females, as there is a greater expectation within the community that the Fire Department should have women firefighters.

Enhancing Your Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence: Understanding yourself, and your impact on others

Daniel Goleman states that “90% of the difference between star performers and average performers in senior leadership is Emotional Intelligence.” Emotional Intelligence is the ability to sense, understand and effectively apply the power and acumen of emotions to facilitate higher levels of collaboration and productivity.

The ability to understand your emotional state, regulate your emotions, and display empathy in the workplace may be the key difference between good leaders, and great ones. This session will review the results of the individual Emotional Quotient Assessments (EQ) and discuss areas of potential risk associated with particular styles. Emotional intelligence provides a window into how people will apply their Behavioral Style and whether or not to expect success. Daniel Goleman’s six leadership styles will be reviewed and compared with the collective behavioral styles, and emotional intelligence results.

This session, based upon the theories of Daniel Goleman, will explore the tenets of Emotional Intelligence and outline techniques to build competency in the following intrapersonal and interpersonal skills:

Learning objectives of this session are:

  • - Recognize and understand your moods, emotions, and drives, as well as their effect on others
  • - Be able to control or redirect disruptive impulses and moods and the propensity to suspend judgment
  • - Establish proficiency in managing relationships and building networks
  • - Have the passion to work for reasons beyond money and status
  • - Pursue goals with energy and persistence
  • - Understand the emotional make-up of other people
  • There will be a pre-assignment for this session in the form of an online assessment of each participant’s emotional intelligence
  • (total estimated time to complete the assessment is 20 minutes)
